A smart stripper knows you gotta get a gimmick, so this year marked the introduction of a theme that was carried through the entire production. Taking a cue from the musical revivals popping up all over the place in 1994, it was called “Revival: A New Way to Do It.” Show-tune standards were flipped into contemporary radio hits—a mash of styles that perfectly reflected the Broadway Bares marriage of the ancient art of striptease with the pop culture of the day. Now starring more than fifty dancers with Ricki Lake as a celebrity guest host, it was burlesque re-imagined for a contemporary audience. A packed-to-the-rafters crowd and a take of $38,000 proved there was a growing appetite for the Broadway Bares sex-positive formula of boys, beer, girls, and gags.
